Door to door sales: the first 30 seconds
Door to door sales tips for the first 30 seconds: get out of the car with the 60-second rule, break the homeowner's autopilot, say who you are, then make it about their bill.

Written for solar. The scripts on this page are written for solar door-to-door. The habits work at any door; change the words for what you sell, and follow your company's approved scripts.
Why is the hardest door the car door?
Because many lost days are lost in the driver's seat, not on a doorstep. You park, check your phone, run your opener one more time, and decide the next street might be better. Twenty minutes later you still haven't knocked. Rehearsing in the car feels like getting ready, but your words only get better at a door, out loud.
Once a day, at the start of your shift:
- Park.
- Be out of the car within 60 seconds.
- Walk to the nearest house that isn't posted no-soliciting or on your do-not-knock list.
- Knock.
That first door has one job: to get you moving. A no, a closed door or nobody home, it still did its job. Park. Sixty seconds. Nearest door. Knock.
What should you do in the first five seconds at the door?
Break the homeowner's autopilot. Knock, step back so you aren't crowding the door, plant your feet and keep your badge where they can see it. When it opens: wave, smile, eye contact. Then confirm the name if you have it from your company's lead list, or ask if they're the homeowner. Hearing a real question brings people back.
- You
Hi! You're [name], correct?
Only with a name from your company's lead list. Otherwise:Hi! Are you the homeowner?
- Homeowner
- Yeah. Who are you?
What do you say in seconds 5 to 15?
Say who you are, who you work for and why you're there, before they have to ask. Name, company and badge should all come out in the first ten seconds. Saying you're with a private solar company answers “are you with the utility?” before it comes up, and “I'll be quick” answers “I'm busy.”
- You
I'm [your name] with [company], a private solar company. Here's my badge. I'll be quick.
How do you use seconds 15 to 30?
Make it about their bill, not your product. Ask one real question and stop talking. Only say you're talking with homeowners on their street if you really are, today. If the answer is “not really,” that's fine: that's the reason you're there. Don't mention savings, prices, approval or anything free.
- You
Let's start with your bill and what you'd want to understand about solar. Have you had a chance to look at yours lately?
- Homeowner
- Not really.
- You
No problem. That's why I'm here.
They say “not interested” before you speak: Totally fair. One question and I'm gone?
They're on the phone: hold up two fingers. Two minutes when you're done?
Busy house: Looks like a full house. Better tonight or tomorrow?

Never invent a neighbor, a neighbor's decision or a neighbor's savings, and never share a neighbor's name or details without their OK. Never skip your name, your company or why you're there. Never say or imply you're with the utility or the government, and don't promise savings, prices, approval or anything free.
Which door rules apply before you knock?
Check your local rules before your first shift. Many towns require a solicitor permit and set allowed knocking hours. Skip any house with a no-soliciting sign and anyone on a local do-not-knock list. Rules vary by city and county and they change, so check the code and your company's rules. This is sales training, not legal advice.

Questions
What is the 60-second rule?
Once a day at the start of your shift: park, be out of the car within 60 seconds, walk to the nearest house that isn't posted no-soliciting or on your do-not-knock list, and knock.
Are these door-to-door scripts only for solar?
They're written for solar. The habits work at any door, but change the words for what you sell and follow your company's approved scripts.
Should I say I'm talking with the neighbors?
Only if it's true today. Never invent a neighbor, a neighbor's decision or savings, and never share a neighbor's details without their OK.
Do these openers work outside solar?
The structure does: say who you are, why you're at this door and one easy question, then step back. The words are written for solar setters, so if you sell something else, keep the beats and rewrite the lines for your product and your local rules.
