How to train new solar sales reps
Train new solar reps on one way of selling, in order: the words first, then supervised doors or appointments, then sign-off on the rules before they sell alone. Plan two weeks for a new setter and 30 days for a new closer, and move on when each week's goal is met, not when the calendar says so.

Start with one way of selling
If three trainers teach three openers, the new rep learns none of them. Pick one door flow, one two-visit close and one pattern for every objection, then train everyone on the same words.
- One pattern for objections: acknowledge, ask, answer, advance. See it on five objections.
- One door flow: the same ten steps for every setter. See the opener.
- One set of rules: the same compliance checklist for setters and closers.
The setter's first two weeks
| When | What they do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Learn the door flow, and the opener and pitch word for word. Get the badge and any local permit. |
| Day 2 | Tonality drills. Shadow a senior setter for a full shift. |
| Day 3 | Shadow again, then run the opener on a few doors with the senior setter beside them. |
| Day 4 | Run the survey and qualifying on their own doors, and track their numbers. |
| Day 5 | Practice the time funnel, the confirmation and the meter-and-bill move. |
| Week 1 is done when | They run the opener, pitch and survey without notes, in the right tone. |
| Days 6 to 7 | Drill doorstep objections before each shift. Write a handoff sheet for every set. |
| Day 8 | First phone follow-ups, with consented numbers only. |
| Day 9 | Ask the closers how their sets went, and adjust. |
| Day 10 | Review both weeks of numbers with you. |
| Week 2 is done when | You've watched them run the full door flow and the phone rules correctly. |
The closer's first 30 days
| Week | What they do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Learn the map | Learn the confirmation call and the presentation word for word. Ride along on every appointment you can arrange. Learn your products, financing, credit process, agreements and cancellation process. | They can run the presentation and agenda without notes. |
| 2 · Say it out loud | Drill objections daily with a partner. Read three real bills, with permission and personal details covered. Lead the door-to-table and the bill review while a senior closer runs the rest. | They can explain tiered and time-of-use billing, and both designs, in plain words. |
| 3 · Run it with backup | Practice the credit-check and UCC scripts. Walk the paperwork on sample documents. Run full first visits with a senior closer present, and review each one. | They explain cash, loan, lease, PPA and the UCC filing correctly, every time. |
| 4 · Run your own | First and second visits, each reviewed with you. Next-day check-ins on signed deals, and referrals at the cool down. | You've signed off on the rules below. |
The weekly huddle, 30 to 45 minutes
Run it every week, before anyone heads out. At least half of it is live practice.
- Scoreboard: sets, sits and installs from your company system. No names shamed; celebrate progress.
- One skill: one topic only, such as an opener, an objection or the paperwork.
- Live drill: the objection circle, two lines facing each other, or pairs running a full appointment on each other.
- The graduation rule: new reps come to an extra weekly practice until they hit your milestone. Then they help teach it.

One list per rep. Tick each item when you've watched them do it. Nothing here is saved.
The rules behind each item, with the laws named, are on the solar sales compliance checklist.
Sales training only. Rules vary by state and city and change. Have your company's compliance team or lawyer confirm your sign-off list.
What to track, and what not to promise
Track conversations, sets, sits, decisions, cancellations and referrals for every rep, every week. Watch the cancellation rate most closely: it's the clearest sign of pressure selling. A 2021 study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that about 1 in 10 residential solar customers who signed cancelled before their system was installed, and that larger installers reported higher cancellation rates.
Don't promise new reps results or pay. Show them the numbers that actually happen, and coach the step where their numbers drop.
Questions
How long does it take to train a solar sales rep?
Plan about two weeks for a new door setter and about 30 days for a new closer. Move on when each week's goal is met, not when the calendar says so. Some reps need longer, and that's fine.
Should new reps shadow before they knock?
Yes. Have them shadow a senior rep for a full shift, then run the opener on a few doors with that rep beside them, before they work a street alone.
What should a solar sales huddle cover?
One win each, the scoreboard from your company system, one short announcement, one skill, and live practice for at least half the time. Keep it to 30 to 45 minutes.
Do setters and closers need different scripts?
Same pattern, different job. Setters earn the sit at the door; closers run both visits and the paperwork. Use the same four beats for objections across both, so the handoff sounds like one company.
